First American's offering seemed solid: notes backed by loans on used cars. The loans were said to be insured, and the cars always could be resold if the borrowers defaulted. But such notes have sometimes proved to be lemons, just like some of the beatup cars that back them up. And First American never bought enough loans to back all the notes it sold.http://www.sptimes.com/2002/07/21/Business/Lemon_of_a_deal.shtml

Step-mom Lynn Frey can still recall her daughter Marnie’s love for animals, athletics, drawing and poetry. She describes Marnie as being a typical child who liked climbing trees, horseback riding, and playing in her fort. "She wasn’t afraid of anything," Frey said. She describes Marnie’s appearance- tall, thin, with olive skin and dark brownish- black hair. She had a round face when she was healthy and was a very attractive girl, Frey said quietly as she remembered her missing daughter.
"Street workers are treated like their garbage… to a majority of society they are just bums. They don’t think they have families and are loved," said Frey. She used to go to Vancouver and look for her daughter on the streets after she went missing. She always came home alone.
Marnie was just 24 when she disappeared four years ago from the Downtown Eastside. She began getting involved in drugs while living at home in Campbell River, on Vancouver Island. She began going to Vancouver and got involved in prostitution as a way to pay for her drug habit. There were three times when she tried to stop doing heroin: Marnie would tell her mom, "I don’t like feeling this way. I need help," said Frey. She was not successful in getting treatment and her addition raged on. The last time Marnie’s family spoke to her was in August of 1997 when she called from a pay phone on Hastings Street in Vancouver.
"I miss her dearly. I wish she would pick up the phone, but I know it’s not going to happen… I know damn well we’re not going to find her alive- she’s gone," said Frey.
"…Just another day/ Just another death/ Just one more thing you go forget/ You and your soft, sheltered life/ Just go on and on/ For nobody special from your world is gone/ Just another day/ Just another death/ Just another Hastings street whore sentenced to death…"

Eliminating the "Straw Man" Shielding Lenders and Investors from Liability
The development of "electronic" mortgages managed by MERS went hand in hand with the "securitization" of mortgage loans – chopping them into pieces and selling them off to investors. In the heyday of mortgage securitizations, before investors got wise to their risks, lenders would slice up loans, bundle them into "financial products" called "collateralized debt obligations" (CDOs), ostensibly insure them against default by wrapping them in derivatives called "credit default swaps," and sell them to pension funds, municipal funds, foreign investment funds, and so forth. There were many secured parties, and the pieces kept changing hands; but MERS supposedly kept track of all these changes electronically. MERS would register and record mortgage loans in its name, and it would bring foreclosure actions in its name. MERS not only facilitated the rapid turnover of mortgages and mortgage-backed securities, but it has served as a sort of "corporate shield" that protects investors from claims by borrowers concerning predatory lending practices. California attorney Timothy McCandless describes the problem like this:

The Ontario Crown Attorney's Office withdrew criminal charges against a Toronto man accused of operating a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme partly because the court lacks resources
The Ontario Crown Attorney's Office withdrew criminal charges against a Toronto man accused of operating a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme partly because the court lacks resources, CBC News has learned.
According to a report filed by a court-appointed receiver, Tzvi Erez, 43, used a series of expertly forged documents to defraud more than 70 investors of $27 million.
But in an email from Crown attorney Christine McGoey obtained by CBC News, the Crown said one of the reasons it decided not to pursue the case was because of the competition over trial time.
"There are very serious criminal matters competing for limited trial time, with cases being stayed because of delay," wrote McGoey. "And we have to consider the impact of any delay that might occur throughout the process and the variety of factors that are taken into account in assessing which cases will go to trial before others."
Skype’s video chat now available on Facebook Published On Wed Jul 6 2011
The winners in Facebook’s deal to offer Skype’s video calling are young people, immigrants and, of course, the companies.
For a generation of Facebook users who already spend hours, sending messages, sharing photos and playing Farmville games, it’s another application that will keep them there longer, says Sidneyeve Matrix, who teaches media studies at Queen’s University.
“Facebook is the go-to place for users. We never have to leave Facebook now,” she said, adding the key is people will stay in the same browser for this new video calling feature, which will be available in the coming weeks.
For the 20-somethings who text like crazy, Matrix says video conferencing brings something different. “It has an authentic intimacy for that generation,” she said.

"I can say that on the controversy related to Sino-Forest, we've had a look at some of our existing assessment tools that we use for looking at companies that are trading to see if there are any lessons to be learned," said Martin Eady, who is director of corporate finance at the BC Securities Commission.
"We're certainly open to make adjustments if necessary based on the outcome of any reviews that happen," he said.
